02 Feb Insecurities in the Hiring Process
Years ago I read a quote from “Lee” Iacocca of the Chrysler Corporation (FCA US, LLC) regarding hiring:
“I hire people brighter than me and then I get out of their way”
It’s quite hard at the individual level to buy into the idea of hiring people with more potential than yourself.
However it is absolutely the only way to raise the bar.
So whether you’re hiring for the high potential younger employee or the employee already overqualified for the role, you need to interview with a bar-raiser mentality.
“Over Qualified” is a weak excuse to cover a hiring manager’s insecurities.
The worst pattern of hiring is the hiring manager who tries to hire people who cannot threaten his or her status within the firm. That pattern is lowering the overall quality of the organization.
This is why it’s very important to select hiring managers who care about the firm more than their own status.
Throw away your insecurities and allow yourself the pleasure of hiring the best.
HR and the Senior Management Team needs to be keenly aware of how hiring is taking place.
