Panasonic and Subaru to Establish EV Battery Plant – to Supply Mazda
Sep 6, 2024 By Bloomberg
Panasonic Energy and Subaru are building a new cylindrical lithium-ion battery plant in Oizumi-machi, Gunma Prefecture, which will be used in Subaru EVs starting in 2028.The total investment is 463 billion yen, and the annual production capacity is 16 gigawatt hours as of the end of 2008.
In addition, Panasonic will expand its two plants in Osaka Prefecture to supply battery cells to Mazda from 2015 onward. The total investment will be 83.3 billion yen to increase capacity by 6.5 gigawatt hours by year 30.
Both projects have been approved by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as part of a plan to secure the supply of storage batteries, with a maximum grant of 156.4 billion yen for the project with SUBARU and 28.3 billion yen for the project with Mazda.
Panasonic HD will place importance on the battery business and shift its strategy from one axis in North America to two axes in Japan and the U.S. The company aims to achieve sales of 3 trillion yen in the battery business by responding to demand from domestic automakers.
METI has decided to provide up to 85.6 billion yen for Toyota Motor Corporation and its battery subsidiary to develop next-generation batteries, and up to about 55.7 billion yen for Nissan Motor Co. to develop lithium-ion iron phosphate batteries.
GM in talks to purchase batteries with Chinese company technology – from TDK U.S. plant
Sep 13, 2024 By Bloomberg
GM is in talks to purchase EV batteries from a new plant operated by TDK, which plans to build a plant in the southern U.S., creating about 1,000 jobs. The batteries will use CATL’s technology.
Discussions are ongoing and subject to change depending on the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. This move reflects the response to weak EV demand and pressure from U.S. policymakers to reduce dependence on China.
TDK plans to obtain a technology license for lithium iron phosphate batteries from CATL; GM has no plans for capital participation.
GM commented on its own EV strategy but did not mention this “speculation”; TDK and CATL declined to comment.
