Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda Develop Engines for Electric Vehicles – Compatible with Synthetic Fuels

May 28, 2024 by Bloomberg

Toyota Motor Corporation, Mazda Motor Corporation, and Subaru Motor Corporation announced on March 28 the development of next-generation engines suitable for electrification. These engines are designed to achieve high efficiency and output in combination with electric units, and to improve compactness, design, and aerodynamic performance. In addition to conventional gasoline and diesel oil, the engines will be compatible with a variety of fuels, including synthetic fuel made from hydrogen (e-fuel), biofuel, and liquid hydrogen, with the aim of becoming carbon-neutral.

Toyota and others are pursuing a “multi-pathway” strategy that is tailored to each country’s energy situation, in contrast to the emphasis on electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe and the United States. Internal combustion engine vehicles can also be decarbonized by using alternative fuels such as e-fuel, but lowering the cost of fuel production will be a challenge for widespread use.

Toyota’s Next Step after HVs: Downsizing Engines for PHVs to Compete with BYD, a Leader in the Market

May 29, 2024 By Nikkei

Toyota Motor Corporation announced on March 28 that it will develop a new engine for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs).While demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is declining, PHVs are growing, and Toyota will strengthen its engine technology development.

Toyota President Tsuneji Sato said at a press conference that the company will focus on both EVs and internal combustion engines. The new engine is 10% smaller than the previous model and will be installed in next-generation PHVs and hybrid vehicles (HVs.) While EV sales have stagnated, sales of PHVs and HVs, which are more convenient to charge, are increasing.

According to Global Data, a British research firm, EV sales will more than triple by 2030, but the percentage of internal combustion engine vehicles such as PHVs is expected to remain high. Many manufacturers are losing money on EVs, and PHVs could become a source of revenue.

PHVs have a longer range, are easier to recharge, and have better environmental performance than EVs; the PHV market is expected to nearly double by 2030.

Toyota’s global sales of PHVs have been stagnant at 120,000 units, and competition is intensifying, especially in the Chinese market. BYD in China has been very successful in PHV sales. Toyota plans to roll back PHVs and strengthen its competitiveness in the eco-car market together with expanding its EV lineup. PHVs and HVs are also being re-evaluated in the U.S. and Europe, and manufacturers are reviewing their strategies.
