Types of English Documents

  • Resume: American-style CV
  • CV (Curriculum Vitae): European-style CV
  • Cover Letter : A page to be submitted with the Resume or CV, generally describing your experience, highlights, and personal PR that can be applied to the position you are applying for.
  • Reference Letter: A reference letter from someone who can verify and detail your professional experience for the employer who is hiring. Reference Letter: A document prepared by a past employer, professor, supervisor, colleague, subordinate, or other professional reference.

Format.

There is no set format, so choose a format that you are comfortable with. Be sure to fill out all the required information and make sure your submission is up-to-date.

☑ Keep it to 1-3 A4 size pages.
☑ Fonts should be Calibri or Times New Roman. Use a font that is easy to read and conveys a neat impression.
☑ Unlike Japanese, there are no Kanji characters, so try to keep your writing short and concise. Use bold text and matching size to create a finish that is easy to read.
☑ Summarize your achievements in a way that is easy to understand. Use numbers and be specific.
☑ Chronological formatting is recommended. This is the most common way to summarize your most recent experience, with the most recent experience at the top.

In order to verify the match between the position you are applying for and your background, go back to your most recent experience and summarize it so that you can see relevant experience on the first page.

Personal Information

This field is for name, contact information, date of birth, etc.

First name: Use a large font for legibility, first name first, last name last.
Contact Information: Telephone numbers should be written in country code (+81) + phone number without the 0’s. For example: (+81) 90-0000-0000 Date of Birth: List in order of day/month/year.
Example: (+81) 90-0000-0000
Date of birth: Day/month/year in this order.
Example: 5th November 1986
Nationality: It is a good idea to include your nationality so that the employer can confirm whether or not you need VISA support. If you are a Japanese citizen, write “Japanese”.

<Information that is not mandatory>
Unlike Japanese-language application forms, there is no need to include any information that is not relevant to the job assignment.

Summary

Along with a summary of your career, we recommend that you summarize it in line with the job opening. In 2-4 lines, briefly summarize what and how much you have experienced.

❸ Highlight

Highlighting points that overlap with the skills and experience required for the job will make the document more interesting at a glance. Experience in dealing with global headquarters, management experience, and other expressions used in job postings may vary from company to company, so use the same keywords to describe overlapping experience with the same experience.

❹ Professional Experience

♦Position/Title – Title
Summarize your experience by title and the length of time you have been in charge of each position.
Example: Global Key Account Manager (June 2019 – Present)

♦ Achievements – Key Achievement
No matter what position you hold, be sure to include an Achievements section. It is best if you have specific numbers, but if you don’t have numbers, describe what results or impact you have had.

  • Sales related: how much revenue did it actually bring to the company?
  • Back-office related: cost savings, operational efficiencies, what positive impact has it had on the company?
  • Engineer-related: What difference did you see in the results before and after the development? How did you solve the problem to achieve your goal?

  • Won 12 RFQs over 6 years totaling $ 16 million in revenue.
  • Controlled risks to avoid negative media coverage when TPC network was infected by Ransomware in April 2020.

Education

Education should be listed with the newest at the top of the list. GPA and scholarships should also be listed if you are a high achiever, as they are highly valued in Western Europe.

Summarize the name of the school (country), length of enrollment, faculty, and department in an easy-to-read format.

What is the difference between BA, BS, and BE?

The terms “BS” and “BSc” mean “Bachelor of Science” and are often used for more specialized courses than the BA. The term “BS” or “BSc” is used mainly in science courses, but it varies from school to school, so it is advisable to check the website of the school you graduated from. If there is no such notation, you can use “BA” as a general rule.

What is Undergraduate and Postgraduate?

Undergraduate is under graduation, so it indicates that the first degree has been completed.

  • Undergraduate is basically a college student with a Bachelor or Associate degree.
  • Postgraduate is the next step, graduate students pursuing the second stage or higher.
