Suzuki to invest in start-up company to develop automatic driving technology for “Kei” (mini cars).

Suzuki has formed a capital and business alliance with Tiafour (Nagoya, Japan), a startup in automated driving systems, to jointly develop automated driving technology for mini-cars.The company aims to meet demand in rural areas where the population is aging and to put the technology to practical use as soon as possible.

Tiafoe is developing a highly accurate automated driving system in cooperation with companies around the world, utilizing the open-source automated driving OS “Autoware”. In cooperation with Suzuki, the company is working to improve automated driving systems suitable for rural areas, such as narrow roads and hills.

Suzuki took the top spot with a 34% share of new light car sales in FY2023. Kei cars are popular among women and the elderly because of their low taxes and insurance premiums, and their small size. However, there are challenges to the future of the market, such as the increasing number of drivers returning their driver’s licenses due to the aging of the population.

The practical application of automated driving technology is expected to play an important role in securing means of transportation in rural areas where public transportation is scarce and in Suzuki’s growth strategy.

Shanghai, China, Allows Tesla Fully Automated Cars to Test Drive

The city of Shanghai has granted U.S. electric car giant Tesla permission to test drive 10 vehicles with its latest self-driving software, fully automated driving (FSD), the Shanghai Observer reported.

Tesla has been selling FSDs in China for four years, but with limited functionality. With this permit, the company may increase its competitiveness in the Chinese market.

CEO Elon Musk is believed to have visited Beijing in April to discuss FSD deployment. Tesla is also expanding its investment in China, having begun construction of a plant in Shanghai to produce “megapacks,” large storage batteries.

Xiaomi, 2,000 for EV driving assistance

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has announced plans to increase the number of developers of electric vehicle (EV) driver assistance technology to 2,000 by 2025. The company, which launched its first EV, the SU7, in March, aims to increase sales by improving driver assistance technology.

The number of developers will be increased to 1,500 by the end of 2012, and 4.7 billion yuan (approximately 100 billion yen) will be invested in this field. Of this amount, 1.5 billion yuan will be allocated in 2012. Xiaomi plans to utilize AI technology cultivated in its existing business to advance driver assistance functions.

The current SU7 is equipped with automatic acceleration/deceleration and lane change functions on highways. The high-performance model will be equipped with autonomous driving on public roads and automatic parking functions.

In addition to improvements within the framework of the current “Level 2” automated driving, Xiaomi is expected to develop more advanced technologies.
