Honda and Nissan Motor have reached a basic agreement on talks to strengthen their relationship with a view to a business merger and are considering establishing a new holding company.

Honda intends to nominate a majority of the holding company’s directors to lead the new structure, with the aim of reaching a final agreement in June 2025. The two companies aim to list the holding company by August 2026, and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is likely to join them.

The combined annual sales volume of the three companies will be approximately 8.5 million units, making them the third largest in the world.

The two companies have been collaborating in the field of electrification, particularly EVs, and this integration is a move in anticipation of the rise of Chinese manufacturers and their response to the rapid electrification of the auto industry.
