Honda is developing all-solid-state batteries for next-generation EVs, aiming to double the range and reduce costs by 25% compared to current lithium-ion batteries by the late 2020s.

A 43 billion yen investment will be made to construct a demonstration line in Tochigi Prefecture, which is scheduled to begin operation in January 2024. All-solid-state batteries are safe and have excellent energy density, but humidity control during the manufacturing process is an issue.

Honda is also considering cooperation with Nissan with a view to utilizing the batteries in motorcycles. Toyota and Nissan are aiming to commercialize all-solid-state batteries in 27-28 and 25 years, respectively. With this technology, Japan may regain its competitiveness against China and South Korea.

It is scheduled to start operation in 2027, with an annual production capacity of approximately 700 million square meters. The plant will be operated jointly with Honda, which will invest approximately 39 billion yen.

The company has received subsidies of approximately 44 billion yen from the Canadian government and the Province of Ontario, as well as a 28 billion yen investment from the Development Bank of Japan. With this investment, the company will establish a supply system to meet the demand for EVs in North America.
