NTT opens experimental base for self-driving cars, aiming for future services

On March 15, NTT established a demonstration base for self-driving vehicles in Tokyo and conducted initial tests with a vehicle based on Toyota’s Sienna minivan.

The automated driving system, which is being developed jointly with the U.S. company May Mobility, is equipped with a remote monitoring system that utilizes NTT’s local 5G technology. Currently, the vehicle is being tested at a speed of about 10 km/h in Level 2 with a driver on board, but the company aims to achieve unmanned operation in the future.

NTT is targeting annual sales of 100 billion yen in automated driving services in the 2030s, and is aggressively developing its business, including investing approximately 10 billion yen in May and collaborating with Toyota.

Yamanashi Prefecture is reviewing the LRT plan it had been considering and proposing a new hydrogen-powered trackless transportation system to protect the environment of Mt.

This system, developed by China Tekken and under discussion with a Japanese manufacturer, will utilize the toll road from the foot of the mountain to the fifth station and control the environmental impact by regulating the access of automobiles.

The cost can be reduced by up to 40% compared to the 140 billion yen of the LRT concept, and we aim to start demonstration tests in FY2025. In the future, a connection with the Linear Central Shinkansen Line is also planned.

Toyota’s hybrid vehicle with hydrogen engine and motor debuts

Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled its first hybrid vehicle under development, powered by a hydrogen engine and motor.

The vehicle uses hydrogen instead of gasoline and emits almost no carbon dioxide while driving. The cruising range is approximately 25% longer than conventional models, and acceleration performance has also been improved. Public road tests will begin in Australia next spring, with the aim of commercializing the vehicle in the future.

Vice President Hiroki Nakajima stated that the lack of hydrogen infrastructure is an issue, and that he hopes to improve convenience through hybridization.
