Taiwan, the one and only country in semiconductor manufacturing, and the world is closely watching the effects of the earthquake.
Apr 4, 2024
The largest earthquake in Taiwan caused a temporary shutdown of semiconductor companies.Taiwan is an important semiconductor manufacturing location that supports advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the latest smartphones, and electric vehicles (EVs).
The earthquake killed at least nine people, and major semiconductor companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) and Lianhua Electronics Corporation (UMC) have halted some production. This could affect global demand for semiconductors.
TSMC, in particular, is a pioneer in the field of semiconductor manufacturing, supplying 80-90% of the world’s semiconductors. Therefore, an earthquake in Taiwan could have a serious impact on the global semiconductor supply.
The AI field is also concerned about the shortage of semiconductors. Companies such as Open AI and NVIDIA have expressed concern about the supply of semiconductors needed to develop new AI services.
The semiconductor industry is concentrated in Taiwan because of the extremely complex manufacturing process. However, national security concerns and supply chain disruptions due to pandemics have prompted calls for the decentralization of manufacturing sites outside of Taiwan.
Taiwan is at high risk of earthquakes, and political tensions also exist. China considers Taiwan to be part of its own country and Taiwan has asserted its independence. This situation has implications for regional security.
The risk of military conflict over Taiwan is high, and if war were to break out, it could cause enormous damage to the global economy. This would be a blow on a scale comparable to a new coronavirus pandemic or a global financial crisis.

China’s Xiaomi begins EV shipments, orders exceed 100,000 units.
Apr 3, 2024
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has begun deliveries of its first electric vehicle (EV), the SU7. Orders have exceeded 100,000 units. CEO Lei Jun said at the shipping ceremony in Beijing, “Xiaomi’s car has made its debut and the smart car revolution has begun.
The first 5,000 cars have already been produced and deliveries will begin. Early buyers will be equipped with additional accessories. After the SU7 was announced last week, there was a 4-7 month wait for prospective buyers, indicating that demand is high.
This caused the stock price to briefly rise 16%, but some analysts estimated a loss of nearly $10,000 per unit. As a result, the stock price fell more than 3% in three days of trading.
Xiaomei’s market capitalization, calculated at the two-day high, was $55 billion, higher than General Motors’ $52 billion and Ford Motor’s $53 billion.

U.S. and China agree to discuss balanced economic growth
Apr 7, 2024
The U.S. and China agreed to dispel concerns about overcapacity in China’s electric vehicle and other industries and to engage in intense discussions on balanced economic growth.
The agreement was announced by the U.S. Treasury Department on Saturday after two days of talks in Guangzhou between U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The two sides agreed to exchange views focusing on balanced growth of the domestic and global economies.
Chair Yellen said the discussion will promote discussion of macroeconomic imbalances, including those related to excess production capacity, adding that she is particularly concerned about the impact of China’s excess industrial capacity on the U.S. economy.
He further stated that he believes a shift away from policies conducive to overcapacity would be beneficial.
China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the Chinese side expressed grave concern over U.S. economic and trade measures restricting China and addressed the issue of production capacity.
With the U.S. and China at odds over such issues as Chinese subsidies for EV manufacturers and U.S. restrictions on semiconductor exports, attention has turned to finding common ground.
