Biden Administration Introduces New Tailpipe Regulations to Boost EVs and Hybrids
Mar 20, 2024
The U.S. Biden administration has finalized vehicle emission regulations to transition the auto market to electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids. The regulations were originally intended to have two-thirds of all vehicles sold by 2030 be EVs, but will be phased in slowly to allow for flexibility. With this change, by 2032, between 35% and 56% of vehicles sold will be EVs and between 13% and 36% will be plug-in hybrids. The regulations are expected to reduce emissions by about 7 billion tons and take into account the concerns of workers and the auto industry.
The new regulations are a revision of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed plan for a rapid transition to EVs. The original proposal called for two-thirds of all vehicles to be EVs by 2030, but the government, under pressure from automakers and labor unions, decided to revisit this plan. As a result, the regulations were phased in gradually to allow for flexibility, and a policy to promote plug-in hybrid vehicles as well.
This regulatory change is seen as an important part of the U.S. climate change effort. The transportation sector is one of the major contributors to climate change in the United States, and as such, reducing vehicle emissions is critical. This regulation is seen as an important step toward reducing the impacts of climate change by the transportation sector.
The implementation of this regulation is fraught with political controversy: the transition to EVs is one of the Biden administration’s key policy issues, and its success or failure could have implications for future election results. Criticism of the regulation is particularly strong from some Republicans.
The goals of the regulation include not only addressing climate change, but also improving public health. Vehicle emissions are one of the major sources of air pollution; therefore, the regulation has important implications not only for the environment but also for human health.

BYD Adopts Nvidia’s Next-Generation Chips for Advanced Self-Driving Technology
Mar 19, 2024
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is planning to leverage a next-generation chip from U.S. semiconductor maker Nvidia to bring self-driving and digital capabilities to its vehicles. The chip, called Drive Thor, is designed for generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications and will support a wide range of vehicles, including new energy vehicles, robo-taxis, and robo-buses. According to Nvidia, the Drive Thor chip provides essential functionality for safe and secure advanced automated driving and creates a centralized platform.
Danny Shapiro, Nvidia’s vice president of automotive, has announced that BYD vehicles will be equipped with Drive Thor next year, and BYD is also planning to use Nvidia’s technology to optimize its factory and supply chain and develop a virtual showroom. The company has also expanded its partnerships with other Chinese automakers, with Xpeng and GAC Aion’s Hyper having previously announced plans to adopt Nvidia’s Drive Thor technology.
Chinese automakers are stepping up investment in infotainment technologies, including self-driving and AI, to compete internationally, many of which leverage Nvidia’s advanced technologies. for BYD, partnering with Nvidia is crucial to competing with Tesla, as well as with existing brands and regulatory scrutiny in the West. Nvidia’s partnership with Nvidia is critical to BYD’s ability to compete with Tesla as well as with existing brands and regulatory scrutiny in the US and Europe.
